What is Bittensor?
Bittensor is a open-source machine learning protocol built on blockchain. It enables the integration of AI models to form a decentralized artificial intelligence network. This decentralized approach allows for rapid expansion and sharing of knowledge, akin to an unbounded knowledge library that grows exponentially.
Bittensor utilizes the Proof of Intelligence consensus mechanism to monetize artificial intelligence. Researchers and developers (producers) contribute knowledge to the network in the form of machine learning models. Subsequently, businesses (consumers) can purchase this knowledge to create their own applications.
Proof of Intelligence (POI) is a consensus mechanism used in the Bittensor network to reward nodes that contribute valuable machine learning models. It is a variant of the Proof of Work (PoW) and Proof of Stake (PoS) mechanisms used in blockchain networks, but instead of solving complex mathematical problems, nodes in Proof of Intelligence are required to perform machine learning tasks to demonstrate their intelligence.
The output of a node’s machine learning model, the more accurate and valuable, the higher the chance of being selected to add a new block to the chain and receive rewards in the form of TAO tokens.
Bittensor’s Operation Mechanism
Bittensor employs the Proof of Intelligence (POI) consensus mechanism to create a decentralized network that allows for the monetization of artificial intelligence (AI). Instead of solving complex mathematical problems like traditional blockchain networks, subnets in the Bittensor network compete by demonstrating their intelligence through the execution of machine learning tasks. Tasks of subnets may include:
- Training and deploying machine learning models.
- Data processing.
- Performing other AI-related tasks.
The accuracy and value of the results that a subnet produces from machine learning tasks will determine the chances of that subnet being selected to add a new block to the blockchain. When selected, the subnet will receive rewards in the form of TAO tokens from the Bittensor network.
This mechanism ensures that subnets capable of executing tasks and contributing genuine knowledge are duly rewarded. It also encourages the development and improvement of machine learning models within the Bittensor network.
Development Team
The Bittensor development team includes:
Jacob Robert Steeves (Founder): Previously experienced as a Machine Learning Researcher at Knowm Inc and has worked at Google as a software engineer.
Ala Shabana (Co-founder): Before co-founding Bittensor with Jacob, he worked as a software engineer at VMware and FirmChannel.
The TAO token is used to reward nodes in the Bittensor network and was launched in a fair launch (no tokens were sold beforehand) in 2021. The total supply of TAO is 21,000,000 and rewards are halved every 10.5 million blocks.
